Method

How it is calculated

Broker commission

value × slab rate, minimum Rs. 10

The slab depends on the value of that one buy or sell.

SEBON fee

value × 0.015%

DP charge

Rs. 25 per scrip per sell day

Charged when shares leave your demat on a sale.

Capital gains tax

(sale value − selling charges − buy cost incl. charges) × rate

Only on a gain. Rate depends on holding period and investor type.

Breakeven

lowest price where sale value − selling charges ≥ buy cost

Found by search because the slab and minimum make it non-linear.

Questions

Common questions

How is broker commission worked out?
SEBON caps commission by the value of each buy or sell: 0.36% up to Rs. 50,000, 0.33% to Rs. 5 lakh, 0.31% to Rs. 20 lakh, 0.27% to Rs. 1 crore and 0.24% above. Very small trades pay a flat Rs. 10.
What other charges apply?
A SEBON fee of 0.015% of trade value on every buy and sell, and a DP charge of Rs. 25 per scrip on the day shares are transferred out after a sale.
What capital gains tax applies now?
From 22 September 2026, individuals pay 5% on gains from listed shares held 365 days or less and 3.75% if held longer; institutions pay 10%. Rates changed twice in 2026, so the calculator lets you pick the period.
Is this exact?
It is an estimate for planning. Your broker's contract note is the final figure.
